Midnight Drivers - Standard Digital Archive
Official Engine Room Records Digital Archive
The album that was never meant to be. Back in 1987, during the pristine pop days of the Electric Color era, The Stardust Engine shopped around a dark, moody track called "Midnight Drivers." Apex Records categorically rejected it for being too atmospheric and shelved the master tape entirely.
Fourteen years later, fully independent and operating with absolute creative control, the band finally rescued the untouched 1987 recording from the vault. To give the song the conceptual home it always deserved, they retro-engineered an entire 1980s New Wave album from scratch around it. Side A captures the bright, high-speed synth-pop illusion of their corporate past, while Side B plunges into the isolating sanctuary of the dark, anchored by the legendary lost track itself. To complete the archival illusion, the band padded the release with era-accurate studio outtakes, club remixes, and basement demos.
